The walnut is a type of tree nut that has a hard, tough shell. The inner meat looks sort of like a tiny brain… no wonder they’re called brain food! When it comes to taste - walnuts are meaty and rich, sweet, and earthy. The papery skin adds a nice bitterness and the shell is an excellent protective barrier, thus unshelled walnuts last longer and have less strict storage requirements.

Walnuts are most often eaten on their own as a snack but also known to be a great addition to muffins and cakes, like banana bread, carrot cakes and zucchini loafs. They can be added to salads, pastas, breakfast cereals and soups.

These nuts are rich in omega-3 fats and contain higher amounts of antioxidants than most other foods. Eating walnuts may improve brain health and prevent heart disease and cancer.
