I think it would be rude not to firstly mention the beauty of this spice. Star anise is a symmetrical rust-coloured star that looks like some sort of decadent piece you’d find on a grazing table of some sort. Star anise is an earthy, subtly sweet spice has a number of uses in savoury cooking, especially in traditional Asian dishes.
This spice is used to season everything from roast duck to spiced nuts, but you could also use it as a substitute for pumpkin pie spice when baking. Star anise gives a sweet, licorice-y flavour to dishes similar to clove and aniseed.
Star anise is also key ingredient in Vietnamese pho - if you haven’t tried a DIY pho from home, you’re missing out! We mix star anise, cloves and cinnamon to get our broth tasting extra delicious.
