Black sesame seeds are small, flat, oily seeds that grow in the fruit pods, Sesame seeds grow in a variety of colours, including shades of brown, tan, grey, gold, and white. Black sesame seeds have a slightly nuttier, more bitter flavour compared to their sweeter white equivalent.
Black sesame seeds are used in Japanese and Chinese cookery to flavour salads, tofu, dressings, dipping sauces, cakes, biscuits, confectionery, desserts, ice creams and drinks. You can even sprinkle these nutrient-rich seeds over your cereals, noodles or sushi as well as mixing them with your yoghurt or smoothie to give it that nutty flavour. They can be consumed roasted, crushed or raw.
